When the emperor of Rome found that this priest had defied his decree, the emperor ordered Valentine to be put to death. Another story took place in prison about a Valentine who could have been the first person that sends a “valentine” greeting to his jail officer’s daughter, whom he fell in love with during her visit of her father’s workplace.

Kek Lapis Sarawak Back Story This pastry is the pride and joy of Sarawak. It originates from Indonesia’s own various spiced cake called lapis legit or kek lapis Betawi. Lapis Legit are commonly baked with not more than two colours. It was probably around the 1970’a or 1980’s that the Betawis introduced their pastry to Sarawakians whom then added new ingredients, colours and design of their own. The name “ Sarawak Layer Kek” is protected by geographical indication, which means, even if it was produced in similar style outside of Sarawak, the manufacturer can only name their cake “ Sarawak-Styled” cake Lapis instead. It is considered to be illegal to use “Sarawak Kek Lapis” outside of Sarawak. There are two types of lapis cake, one with normal layers and another with beautiful motifs and geometric patterns. It must have a minimum of two colours for every design.

Kueh Momo History Kuih Momo, or else also known as Kuih Makmur’s origin is hard to pinpoint. It is believed to have come from the Middle East. Probably introduced by the Arab merchants throughout the island clusters of Malay civilisation back in the days. Hence, it is not shocking to see Kuih Momo in Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It is especially prominent in Kelantan and Terengganu, the Eastern States of Peninsular Malaysia and is usually served during the Eid celebration. Now it is adopted into the Malaysian Chinese culture too.

Why is Kuih Momo loved during this season? The Chinese love anything round because round represents coin and said to bring prosperity for the Lunar New Year. Peanut is one of the main ingredients of most cookies and biscuits because the peanut, FA SANG (花生) in Chinese, the word SANG means life. Having anything peanut served is to wish someone with longevity and healthy long life.
